Essentially you can create a process, called a recipe, that will trigger an event. So, for example, you can have IFTTT monitor an RSS feed and send you alerts when a new item is posted. For me, I use Pocket for link saving and IFTTT automatically stuffs items for my later reader. I don't even have to monitor a Twitter or RSS feed. Or have it text you the weather forecast every morning. Or even have event-based controls for your lightening using WeMo kits.
